AF 75th Anniversary
The Department of the Air Force was created when President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947. It became effective Sept. 18, 1947, when the first secretary of the Air Force, W. Stuart Symington, took the oath of office. For 75 years, Airmen have excelled as they execute the Air Force mission to fly, fight, and win — delivering airpower anytime, anywhere in defense of our nation.
