Chief Master Sergeant Wayne H. Cox
Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chief of Security Police
Born December 10, 1946, in Joplin, Missouri, he graduated from Junction City Senior High School, Junction City, Kansas in May 1964. He is a graduate of the 15th Air Force Leadership School, Air Force Security Service Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) Academy, and Air Force Senior NCO Academy. He attended the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy, Quantico, Virginia, graduating in September 1979. He was a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Army Basic NCO Course, Combat Arms, Fort Benning, Georgia in May 1981. He holds an associate of arts degree in security administration from the Community College of the Air Force.
Chief Cox entered the Air Force in 1966. Upon completion of basic training and Air Police Technical School, he was assigned to the 6th Combat Defense Squadron, Walker AFB, New Mexico as a flight security specialist. In March 1967 he was assigned to the 12th Security Police Squadron, Cam Ranh Bay Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. A year later he was reassigned to the 3700th Security Police Squadron, Lackland AFB, Texas, serving as law enforcement patrolman, desk sergeant, and security police investigator. In March 1970 he became the NCO in Charge (NCOIC) of administrative security, 6927th Security Squadron, Onna Point, Okinawa. Eighteen months later, reassignment took him to the 6922nd Security Group, Clark Air Base, Philippines, as NCOIC of personnel security. His next assignment, in September 1973, was to the 90th Security Police Squadron, F.E. Warren AFB, Wyoming, as law enforcement flight chief. He went to the 6913th Security Squadron, Rimbach and Augsburg, Germany, in 1974. From September 1976 until May 1981, Chief Cox was NCOIC of security police plans and programs, Headquarters U.S. Air Force Security Service, Kelly AFB, Texas. An assignment to Headquarters Air Force Office of Security Police, Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, as chief of security training followed. In April 1985 he became security police manager, 501st Security Police Group, Royal Air Force Greenham Common, United Kingdom. His next assignment took him to Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe as security police manager and staff action officer. In April 1991 Chief Cox became security police manager at the 443rd Security Police Squadron, Altus AFB, Oklahoma. He assumed his current position in July 1992.
Chief Cox's military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with one oak leaf cluster and "V" device, and the Organizational Excellence Award with one oak leaf cluster.
He was promoted to chief master sergeant on December 1, 1985.
